Nutraceuticals are a class of goods that are neither food nor medications. Unfortunately, there is still no internationally agreed-upon definition for these products, thus opinions vary from country to country. Nutraceuticals are used as part of dietary supplements in most nations. In affluent countries, nutraceuticals are used by 50–70% of the population, and this percentage is rising as people get older. Nutraceuticals are used by women more than men. Nutraceuticals are trusted products in terms of safety, even though they are not approved by authorities like pharmaceuticals. Clinical trials have been conducted on a variety of nutraceuticals, and the results of these trials confirm their effectiveness as well as their overall safety. Nutraceuticals, on the other hand, pose a risk if used without medical supervision, as interactions with medications can be dangerous, especially in susceptible groups (the elderly, the very young, and the chronically ill). Fish oil preparations, prebiotics, and probiotics are all discussed as examples.
