It is our goal to address the training needs of health professionals all over the world who are interested in a career in public health or those who want to improve their current skills in this field through our distance learning Master of Public Health (MPH) program.
Practitioners in contemporary public health practice must be versatile and flexible, and they must have a comprehensive knowledge of a variety of subject areas to succeed.
In order to keep up with the quickly changing and interdisciplinary area of public health, our program is always expanding, with new course units and subjects being added on a regular basis to guarantee that you are at the forefront of contemporary public health practice. We also provide additional learning opportunities through our research and continuing professional development (CPD) program, which address current topics in public health and primary care.

In addition to learning more practical aspects of public health, I gained confidence in applying the theory to my day-to-day public health initiatives as a result of my MPH education.

Instruction from a professional
Throughout the program, you will be taught by professionals in the fields of local, national, and international public health and health promotion. There is a strong emphasis on applying what has been learned to challenges of public health.


Learning that is adaptable
Because the course content is offered online, you may fit your studies around your other commitments. It is preferable but not mandatory to attend a face-to-face orientation session in Manchester at the start of the course. There are totally online and hybrid alternatives available, both of which include scheduled face-to-face sessions.

Induction with a face-to-face meeting (if possible)
In most cases, a face-to-face introduction is held at the University at the start of the academic year.
The course is intended to familiarize you with the content and technology that will be utilized throughout the programs. You will also have the opportunity to meet members of the academic and support staff.
You are strongly urged to participate in the face-to-face introductory course when it is offered, as many students find it to be extremely helpful.





Nonetheless, due to the international nature of our programs, attendance is not required, and an online induction is also available.
The face-to-face orientation comprises the following elements: • an overview of the course units; • an opportunity to meet with tutors and administrators; and • an introduction to the online learning environment (if applicable).

A chance to share your work and learn about the work of other students.
For the face-to-face induction, you will be responsible for arranging your own transportation and lodging arrangements.
Once you have submitted your application for the course, you will be asked to confirm your participation at the residential induction.
Induction via the internet
Our online induction will provide a program that is identical to the face-to-face induction, but will be given exclusively through the internet. Attendance is not required, however it can be beneficial in introducing you to the course and the staff, as well as providing you with the opportunity to ask any questions you may have during the induction.
Teaching and learning are two intertwined concepts.
The vast majority of our course units are offered entirely online. Throughout the course unit, a learning structure with a recommended pace is in place, and specified deadlines are set for all summative examinations to be completed.
It is necessary for you to participate in all course units; however, some of the optional units are blended, which means that you must meet with your instructor in person. Please review the Course Unit Overview to see if your chosen course unit includes any face-to-face teaching days, as this information is clearly indicated in the Overview.
Because of mitigating circumstances, you may be permitted to repeat this unit in a subsequent year if you are unable to participate in a face-to-face component of the course. You should avoid selecting a blended unit if you are unable to attend any of the face-to-face sessions scheduled. If you believe this is going to be a problem, please email
Coursework and evaluation are required.
It is expected that you will participate in a variety of graded and non-assessed activities to improve critical skills and broaden your knowledge base. It is not necessary to take written exams; instead, assignments and other activities, like as moderated discussion boards and group work, are used to assess students.
Specifics on the course unit
Evidence-Based Practice is a mandatory core unit that you must finish in order to graduate.
In addition to the mandatory course unit, you must select additional units based on the award you are pursuing. These optional units include:
A total of three additional course units from the MPH must be chosen by PGCert students, and a total of seven additional course units must be chosen by PGDip students from the MPH. A total of nine additional course units from the MPH must be chosen by MPH students in addition to the dissertation, or nine additional course units from the MPH plus the critical review.
If you opt to study one of the specialist streams, you will be able to select up to two more core units from the MPH program to complete your degree. The School of Health Sciences at Manchester University and the Alliance Manchester Business School will be offering additional course units over the next few years if you want to pursue a degree in the Health Sciences stream.
Students who complete their MPH through the dissertation path will have the option of selecting from a variety of dissertation modules that are tailored to particular work conditions and interests. When writing a master’s dissertation, you should aim for clarity, critical thinking and reflection. Your goal should be to contribute to the understanding of a certain subject or question. It is an opportunity to broaden one’s knowledge and expertise in a particular field of study by engaging in in-depth, critical, and reflective thought about a topic that is pertinent to the dissertation’s concentration.
The critical review route will provide you with the opportunity to perform a deep critical reflection and evidence-based review relative to a public health subject or topic while completing the MPH. It is similar in some ways to the early stages of a dissertation, but with a lesser word count of approximately 500 words. If you choose this option, you will be required to complete ten course units in addition to the critical review component.
A dissertation/critical review supervisor will be assigned to you based on the topic that you wish to examine in your dissertation.

Possibilities for continuing professional development
Our Personal Professional Development curriculum in public health and primary care includes a variety of units that can be taken as stand-alone credited CPD courses.
In addition, we host monthly public health journal clubs, the yearly Festival of Public Health, an International Summer School, continuing professional development activities, and our free open-access courses.
Overview of the academic admission requirements
We demand a minimum of an Upper Second honours degree, or the equivalent in another country, to be considered. A significant amount of relevant research or professional experience may be regarded in lieu of an academic qualification lower than an Upper Second if the experience is significant and relevant.
Failure to meet the required admission criteria may result in applications being reviewed on an individual basis, with the possibility of being forced to enrol on an alternative route, such as a PGCert or PGDip first. If you successfully complete the course at the required master’s level, you may be permitted to continue on to the full MPH program.
Students who are intercalating
Upon successful completion of their third year, intercalating medical students from The University of Manchester and other UK universities can enroll in this course. English language proficiency is required.




A secure and certified testing mechanism is required for international students to demonstrate their English language competency. We require proof of English language proficiency from applicants from countries where English is not the primary language (a list of majority English speaking countries, as defined by the UK Home Office ).
To be more specific, we demand a bare minimum of:
• IELTS: a minimum overall score of 6.5 with a writing score of 6.0
90 points on the internet-based TOEFL test (with 22 in each component)

As long as you received your first degree from a university in a non-majority English-speaking country and your first degree was taught in English, the English language requirement may be waived for applicants to our Personal Professional Development CPD programme, provided that written evidence is submitted to support the waiver request.
Despite the fact that the Personal Professional Development (CPD) program is not award-based, it does allow you to complete up to three units from the MPH curriculum. After successfully completing this level of the course, students may be considered for advancement to the award-bearing levels of our course by submitting a re-application to the course directorate.
Validity of the English language test
Results of several English Language tests are only valid for two years after they are given. Your English Language test report must be valid on the day of the course’s start date in order to be accepted.  MPH Public Health (Web-based Learning) program

Tuition Fees For those who wish to enroll in the academic year commencing September 2022, the following fees will be charged:
International, including EU, students (per annum): £20,500 • MPH (part-time distance learning): £10,500 (per annum) (UK students)
• PGDip (part-time distance learning) students in the United Kingdom (per year): £8,400
International students, including those from the EU, receive a yearly salary of £16,400.
• PGCert (part-time remote learning) students in the United Kingdom (per year): £1050 per 15 credits.
International students, including those from the European Union, pay £2,050 per 15 credits per year (per annum).

All of the costs associated with your course tuition and administration will be covered by the fees quoted above throughout your time at university.
All admission costs may be subject to a yearly review, and incremental increases per year are expected to occur over the course of a course lasting more than a year in length.

Your choice of one-year full-time or two-year part time study may make you eligible for a postgraduate loan, depending on your income and financial situation. Please review the eligibility requirements set forth by the government.

During the academic year 2020/21, our face-to-face induction and blended units went live. The Geneva Winter School did not take place in 2020, but the World Health Organization organized special webinars in its place.
This will be based on the appropriate regulations and advice. We intend to offer blended units, introductory courses, and the Geneva Winter School in person throughout the 2021/22 and 2022/23 academic years.
Expenses in addition to the budget
The price of AP(E)L
In order to be considered for Accreditation Prior (Experiential) Learning (AP(E)L), individuals with equivalent previous experience are permitted to submit an application to the University for consideration. The maximum number of AP(E)L credits that can be applied to a certificate is 15, 45 credits for a diploma, and 60 credits for a master’s degree.
If an application for AP(E)L is approved, the University will charge £30 for every 15 credits of AP(E)L that is completed. The overall tuition fee has been reduced, and an administrative fee has been added.
Procedures for dealing with additional expenses
All students should be able to finish their program of study without incurring any additional study expenditures on top of the tuition charge for that program, assuming that the program’s requirements are met. At the time of application, you will be informed of any unavoidable additional required fees that exceed one percent of the yearly home undergraduate fee per year, regardless of whether the program in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught. Commonwealth Scholarships are available to students from all over the world.
There may be a possibility to award Commonwealth Scholarships to deserving young people who are citizens of Commonwealth countries and who reside in those countries. For more information, please consult the CSC website.
