US claims credible reports of Russian executions in Donetsk

US claims credible reports of Russian executions in Donetsk  The United States has strong information that Russia executed Ukrainians who attempted to surrender in the Donetsk region, according to Beth Van Schaack, the United States Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice, who spoke at a United Nations (U.N.) meeting on Wednesday.

During a meeting of the United Nations Security Council focusing on accountability in Ukraine, she stated, “We now have credible information that a Russian military unit operating in the neighborhood of Donetsk murdered Ukrainians who were seeking to surrender, rather than taking them into custody.”

‘If this is true, it would be a violation of a fundamental principle of international humanitarian law,’ she continued, referring to the prohibition against the summary execution of civilians and combatants who have been rendered unable to fight due to surrender, injury, or other forms of incapacitation.

The executions are part of a growing list of war crimes that Russia is accused of committing, which also includes the targeting of civilians, the kidnapping of children, torture, and rape, among other things.

Russia has concentrated its efforts in the Donetsk region after its soldiers were unable to seize control of the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.

As a result, the United States has already described Russia’s actions as “genocide” and has imposed dozens of sanctions against Russia’s economy in an attempt to stall the invasion’s progress. In addition, it has supplied billions of dollars in military assistance to Ukraine during the conflict.

According to Van Schaack, “our straightforward message to Russia’s military and political leadership, as well as the rank-and-file, is that the world is watching, and you will be held accountable.”

Five million Ukrainians have fled their nation in the first two months of the war, with millions more internally displaced as a result of the violence.

Because Russia is apparently shooting at humanitarian assistance vehicles and employees who are assisting civilians, delivering humanitarian aid has been difficult.

Russia has categorically disputed the war crime claims and continues to characterize the invasion as a “special military operation” aimed at rescuing Ukraine from Russian occupation.
