At a ceremony marking the 77th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany on Red Square, Russian President Vladimir Putin denounced what he called external attempts to weaken and divide the country, and he repeated arguments that he had used to justify the country’s invasion of Ukraine: NATO was posing a threat right next to the country’s border with Ukraine.
Soldiers battling in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, which Russia has promised to “liberate” from the Ukrainian government, were addressed personally by Putin.

“The death of every soldier and commander is a horrible experience for us,” he explained. “The state will do everything it can to assist these families,” said the governor.
“For Russia, for Victory, Hurrah!” he said at the conclusion of his speech, addressing the assembled warriors.
Vladimir Putin’s 11-minute statement on the 75th day of the invasion provided no evaluation of the war’s progress and gave no indication as to how long it would last.
The fight, which he characterizes as a struggle against dangerous “Nazi”-inspired nationalists in Ukraine, has been compared to the challenge the Soviet Union faced when Adolf Hitler invaded the country in 1941.
