On Friday, a Danish man named Peter Nielsen was found guilty of murdering his Nigerian wife Zainab and their daughter, who was three and a half years old. He was sentenced to death by hanging by a Lagos High Court that was sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square on Lagos Island.

Nielsen was found guilty of two counts of murder in violation of Section 223 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2015, by Justice Bolanle Okikiolu-Ighile in a ruling that lasted for more than five hours.

On April 5, 2018, at approximately 3:45 in the morning, the Lagos State Government accused Nielsen, who was 53 at the time, of suffocating the two individuals to death at their apartment on Banana Island in the Ikoyi region of the state.

Nielsen entered a plea of not guilty to the two counts of murder he was charged with during his arraignment on June 13, 2018, and the trial immediately followed.

In her decision, Justice Okikiolu-Ighile stated that she relied on the post-mortem examination that was performed on the deceased victims by the consultant pathologist, Professor John Obafunwa.

His investigation had led him to the conclusion that Zainab had been put to death by having her mouth and nose covered, which deprived her of oxygen and led to her death.

The bruises that she had on her head and neck were consistent with blunt force trauma. She had also sustained cuts and scrapes.

The pathologist determined that Zainab and Petra died of head injuries and asphyxia (also known as suffocation), both of which could not have been caused by the victims themselves.

Regarding the question of whether or not the deaths were caused by the defendant (Peter Nielsen), the court recounted several testimonies given by the prosecution witnesses. These witnesses included a housemaid, Zainab’s sibling, and two police officers who testified of incidents of domestic violence perpetrated by Mr. Nielsen on his wife. Specifically, the housemaid testified that Mr. Nielsen had hit his wife.

The court placed a lot of weight on the fact that Pepe, Zainab’s sister, was a truthful witness. She had testified about a dispute that she had seen between the pair in 2017, and she had added that the defendant had threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone else about what she had seen during the argument.

Zainab, who passed away at the age of 37 and was better known by her stage name, Alizee, was in the process of promoting her song “Alhaji Musa” when she was killed.

The court has decided that Dane should be executed by hanging for the murder of his Nigerian wife and daughter.
